SAN FRANCISCO—Michael Hofman, executive vice president of Janet Moyer Landscaping in San Francisco, recently earned certification as a Certified Irrigation Designer (CID).

Awarded by the Irrigation Association (IA), the CID certification signifies that Hofman has the credentials to establish specifications and design drawings for irrigation projects. This includes knowledge and expertise to evaluate site conditions and determine water availability and use requirements; select the most effective irrigation equipment, methods and materials for application; develop efficient and cost-effective irrigation designs that meet plant watering requirements; prepare comprehensive plans and specifications; ensure the installation matches the design intent; and provide direction to the end user on system use, scheduling and maintenance.

Earlier, Hofman earned the IA’s Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor and Certified Irrigation Contractor.

Currently, there are 105 certified CID professionals in California and 615 in the United States. To become certified, applicants must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background and understanding of efficient irrigation theory and methods, plus a commitment to efficient water management.
