OLA_design_workshopsThe Ohio Landscape Association (OLA) is offering four workshops to help landscape professionals develop and strengthen design skills.

Instructed by Kathy Stokes-Shafer, APLD, and Kevin O’Brien, APLD, these workshops offer attendees the opportunity to improve design abilities, boost confidence and gain the tools necessary to create better designs. Workshops will be held at Indiana Wesleyan University, located in Independence, Ohio.

Anyone who would like to become a landscape designer, current landscape designers who would like to sharpen their skills, account managers and salespeople who would like to be able to sell enhancements without involving a designer are encouraged to attend.

Attendees may attend all workshops or individual sessions. Registration fees range from $295 to $1024 for OLA members, and from $395 to $1344 for non-members.

Workshop descriptions:

Landscape Design Course, Part 1 – Jan. 26, 27 & 28

Learn the underlying principles that all great designs need to have in order to be successful. Content will cover all of the design principles, form, form composition and lines of force with hands-on, interactive tools for quick comprehension.

Landscape Design Course, Part 2 – Feb. 9, 10 & 11

Learn the fundamentals of the design process—initial site study and analysis, importance of scale and accuracy, developing a design program, testing ideas with functional diagrams and preparing preliminary and final presentation plans— and discover how to render your design ideas effectively for clarity and comprehension.

Landscape Design Course, Part 3 – Feb. 23, 24 & 25

Get comfortable with the design methodology introduced in the previous session by developing a series of sample site designs. Learn how to go beyond design basics by discovering how to use plants effectively and how to use the Fibonacci sequence, golden mean and golden ratio. Time-saving rendering techniques will be introduced for situations when a quick design is all that is needed to communicate a concept.

Landscape Design Course, Part 4 – March 8 & 9

Learn to communicate design concepts using elevation and section drawings, properly format, label and letter plan view drawings and develop creative design solutions to differentiate you from the competition. Industry-leading salesmen will share their secrets to selling and how they use great designs to sell millions of dollars in landscape work each year.
